In Slovakia, as in most countries, both highways and expressways have been built. The highways are named D1, D2, D3 and D4, while the expressways are distinguished by the signs R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R7 and R8. In Slovakia, it is compulsory to pay for the use of the motorway by purchasing Slovak motorway vignette. As in most countries, the electronic virtual highway sticker system is the most popular here, as it is one of the fastest and most convenient solutions for obtaining a valid sticker.
The Slovak motorway sticker can be purchased for 365 days, 30 days and 10 days. Heavy vehicles that weigh more than 3.5 tons have to pay an additional fee, which is available in the same price category as if you were changing your sticker to a passenger car.
The Slovak D1 highway passes through the country's most famous historical towns, such as Nagyszombat, Trencsén, Kassa and Nagymihály. The D2 highway connects Hungary directly with the Czech Republic. The road also touches the capital, Bratislava. It also facilitates transit through Austria, as the highway runs all the way to the Austrian border. The current length of the D3 highway is 58.8 km, it facilitates traffic up to the city of Zsolna, and according to the agreements, it will be built all the way to the Polish border within a few years. The D4 motorway is a very important part of the Bratislava ring road, which starts at the Austrian border, at the end of the Austrian S8 motorway, and goes all the way to the Austrian A6 motorway.
In addition to the Slovak highways, there are about 760 kilometers of expressways. Most of these roads can also be used with a Slovak motorway sticker. It is not necessary to pay a separate highway toll for the use of some sections, these are also marked with a separate sign. Toll-free road sections are usually found in some parts of the city or on less developed roads, such as two-lane roads.
The maximum permitted speed on Slovak highways and expressways is 130 km/h. If the given toll track passes through a residential area, this speed is reduced to 90 km/h.
