Early Tuesday evening thunderstorms caused major disruptions on several motorways and busy junctions in Budapest, especially on the M3 and M0 motorways and at junctions on the M5 motorway. At Hatvan, the downpours caused cars to travel slowly and traffic to come to a standstill in places. In the Gödöllő area, serious congestion on the Vásárosnamény side of the road was caused by recovery work from an earlier accident.
The thunderstorms affected not only Budapest but also several northern and central Hungarian counties, such as Heves, Nógrád and Pest. In Heves county, firefighters worked at more than twenty locations to repair storm damage, while in Pest county they were called to 30 addresses to remove fallen trees. In Domoszlo, lightning struck a house, while in Hatvan, Boldog and Tura, fallen trees and light poles caused problems.
In the Nógrád county, Balassagyarmat and Karancslapujtő were the most affected, where firefighters cleared roads and railway tracks of fallen trees. The mayor of Balassagyarmat reported that the storm caused extreme damage, such as fallen trees and downed power lines, which also caused power cuts.
The thunderstorms also brought heavy downpours in the western part of the Transdanubian region, with 20-30 millimetres of rainfall in several places and 55 millimetres in Alsónemesapáti, which is almost a month's rainfall. HungaroMet has issued a first level Lemon Yellow alert for the northern and central parts of the country, as up to 25-30 millimetres of rain could fall in a short time in the affected areas.
