Fruzsina Benedek, Development Coordination Director of the Hungarian Concession Infrastructure Development Company (MKIF Zrt.), gave a detailed insight into the complexity of the comprehensive upgrading programme of the 1,237-kilometre motorway network. Under the contract with the Hungarian state, MKIF Zrt. is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the motorway, as well as the design and construction of new sections. The works range from road maintenance, vegetation management, drainage cleaning to major development and construction works. Fruzsina Benedek pointed out that the annual Major Maintenance Programme is planned and agreed with the State in advance each year, taking into account the state of the road network and the need to modernise and ensure an equal level of service. The need for an iterative planning process is illustrated by the need to develop a programme based on all aspects and meeting the needs of all stakeholders. A major task for MKIF Zrt. is to carry out the upgrading works on the road sections that do not meet the required standards, which are due by 31 August 2025. At the same time, in addition to the ongoing development and operational work, attention is also paid to quality assurance, although this is sometimes a less spectacular but important process. In its activities, MKIF Zrt. also takes into account weather conditions, events and sporting events, which may affect the timing of works. In addition, the availability of suitable equipment and capacity, as well as transport options, are also crucial factors in the planning process. The proper construction and maintenance of diversions is also key to ensure safe transport during the construction phases. In order to ensure that road rehabilitation programmes are effective, MKIF Zrt. carries out regular measurements and analyses of road conditions and travel comfort. Ongoing data collection by road inspectors and the use of an online database also help to ensure that interventions are carried out where and when they are needed. One of the biggest motivations for MKIF Zrt. during road construction and rehabilitation works is the opportunity to be involved in a project of this scale and complexity, which is of a major importance not only for Hungary but also for Europe as a whole. Nevertheless, social expectations and criticisms are part of their daily work, which include both appreciative and constructive feedback.
