The eleven-kilometer highway section bypassing the city of Focșani was handed over on November 7, exactly two years after construction began. This road section will also function as a ring road around the settlement. This small highway section is part of the A7 project, which is planned to connect the center of the country, from Ploiești to the border of Ukraine, as far as Siret. Although work is already underway on several sections of the A7, totaling around 300 kilometers (between Ploiești and Pașcani), construction has not yet begun on the section between Pașcani and Siret, which provides the connection to the Ukrainian border. The section of the road between Pașcani and Suceava is currently is in the competition stage, while the feasibility studies for the 55-kilometer long section of Suceava and Siret are not yet ready. Similar difficulties can also be experienced in the southern part of the country, where the road section between Giurgiu (the border to Bulgaria) and Bucharest should be connected to connect to the A7. Knowing all this, drivers still have to wait for an expressway that runs from the Ukrainian border to the Bulgarian leads to the border, and from there further towards Poland and Greece. Status of works on the A7 motorway Some sections of the A7 motorway are already Since 2020, 16 kilometers have been in use as part of the Bacău Ring Road. After the opening of the latest 11-kilometer road section, also known as the "Focșani Humpback", it is expected that another 33 kilometers will be inaugurated around Buzău in the direction of Râmnicu Sărat by November 17. In addition, the 36-kilometer section between Focșani and Râmnicu-Sărat will be completed by the end of the year. promises transport minister Sorin Grindeanu. He visited the construction sites with Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, the day before the inauguration, during the election campaign. In December, another almost 50-kilometer road section will be handed over on the A7 highway between Ploiești and Pietroasele. From the beginning of the year, drivers will be able to drive a total of about 130 kilometers if the promises come true. This would include the Focșani-Buzău and Ploiești-Pietroasele sections, supplemented by the already operational Bacău ring road. Officials are optimistic that the deadlines can be met, especially since many investments will be completed by the end of the year. In the autumn period, there is always talk of how much can be opened to traffic, and the work is accelerated in order to improve the balance of the previous year's performance.
The section between Focșani and Pașcani and the section number 3 between Buză and Focșani will be completed by 2026, when the National Recovery and Resilience Plan will be completed. The A7 stretches from Ploiești to Pașcani: it will cost a total of 6.7 billion euros, of which 1.9 billion will be provided by the resistance plan. Everything needed to complete the construction works within two years. Extensions to Ukraine and Bulgaria We aim to extend the highway to the Ukrainian border, to Siret, Grindeanu stated on November 6. The minister's statement points to a sensitive problem: the border extension of the A7 motorway in the direction of Ukraine (north) and Bulgaria (south). so there is no pressure to finish it by 2026. Similar delays are experienced at the other end of the country, from Bucharest to Giurgiu, where there is a plan to extend the A7. The Romanian transport master plan, which operates between 2021 and 2030 and forms the basis of all major infrastructure projects, assigns strategic goals to transport corridors. According to the development document, the A7 would continue with the Pașcani-Suceava (62 km) and Suceava-Siret expressways (55 km), as part of the current plans. At the other end, near Ploiești, the A7 joins the A3, which already provides a connection between Bucharest and Ploiești. An expressway already leads from this capital to Giurgiu. This creates the second most important strategic corridor in Romania between Giurgiu-Bucharest-Ploiești-Buzău-Focșani-Bacău-Pașcani-Suceava-Siret. "This ensures the connection with Bulgaria in the south, at the Giurgiu crossing, and with Ukraine in the north, via the Siret crossing," confirms the master plan. The planned roads are not only important in light of the current geopolitical situation, but would also play a key role in terms of economic development. Towards Poland," says the deputy minister.
The transport master plan prioritizes the main transport routes Pașcani-Suceava, Suceava-Siret and Bucharest-Giurgiu. These are all part of the Trans-European Transport Network, but currently exist only on a theoretical level. With the exception of the Pașcani-Suceava section, which, although it is the result of tender negotiations, construction has not yet started. Public procurement procedures continue One of the most advanced sections of the A7 highway is the one between Pașcani and Suceava (62 km). The first section of 33 km between Pașcani and Roșcani has already been completed. The builder of the section will be selected by the end of the year. The tender for the other section, which connects from the DN 29 junction to the Suceava airport (29 km), has started. On the other hand, the basic concept of the Suceava-Siret expressway is still under investigation. The conclusion of the contract is dated for 2020, but the implementation is extended until 2025. "I think that the basic concepts will be ready within 3-4 months, and then we can proceed with the approval and public procurement procedures," said Scrioșteanu. In the case of the expressway between Bucaresta and Giurgiu, the works were delayed. This year, the public procurement procedure for the basic concept began, the submission deadline of which is December 9. The total value of the contract is close to 9 million euros and will last for 18 months. Only after the completion of the basic concept can the public procurement procedure for the design and construction of the road begin. The new traffic route, which is more than 50 kilometers long, is being investigated for three route versions. At the end of this route, on the border with Bulgaria, the possibility of connecting the new Giurgiu-Ruse bridge, the Prieteniei 2 bridge, for which Romania won EU support, is being investigated. It may cause difficulties regarding the connection to Bucharest. determining the location of the appropriate connection. The first option is a track parallel to the Budapest-Giurgiu B5 highway You can connect to the A0 ring road to Ploiești-A3 and from there to A7. Two other options connect to the Giurgiu-Ruse border crossing Bucharest A1 highway, it is located west of the capital, it overlaps with another road Bucuresti-Alexandria is still in the project phase. The new destination traffic accessible to the A1 provides a better route, because drivers coming from Bulgaria can more easily pass through Nadlac to the West. Starting from the A1 junction, the Moldova Corridor passes through the A0 Bucharest Ring Road and connects with Ploiesti A3 and then A7. In addition to all this, Scrioșteanu also talks about the construction of a second motorway zone around the capital, which will help to expand connections. "We must have a medium-term and long-term perspective," he argues.
